Pete

I like yum cha. And I like chicken feet.

That’s right: I’m Chinese and slightly eccentric.

Anyway, this particular outing was in celebration of my mum’s, ahem, thirty-fifth birthday – or thereabouts. (Who am I to tell the internet my mum’s real age?)

Pete was a big fan of all the yum cha dishes, which my parents were pretty pleased to see. It’s funny how when Angus isn’t there (like on this particular Friday when he was at daycare), Pete seems to come into his own a bit more. Or maybe it’s simply that we have more time and opportunity and headspace to pay him greater attention and discern all the little things that make him the delightful boy that he is.

To my dearest mum, happy birthday and thanks for everything you do for us.

We love you!

Angus has daycare on Fridays, and while I do miss him, I also cherish the time with just Pete and Jamie. It’s been so interesting watching Pete come into his own as an older brother. He runs into Jamie’s room to chat to him in his cot. He sits down next to Jamie in the living room to watch Play School with him. He brings Jamie toys. He doesn’t take Jamie’s toys away. And he picks up the food that Jamie drops from the high chair and hands it back to him. He is simply the sweetest.

Here’s us having lunch on a Friday. Yup, we’re a Vegemite family. Except for me. My theory is, if you’re not exposed to it by the time you’re six, it’s too late. But I’m glad the boys are Happy Little Vegemites as bright as bright can be. (Had to resist adding rosy cheeks to these photos.)

Happy Friday, everyone! May we all get some sleep…

I am in a dire conundrum. One half of my brain desperately wants to increase the size of photos on this blog by about 15%. The other half of my brain knows that this means all of my older posts will have images that do not fill the width of the entire column, and it cannot cope with this visual eyesore. So what do I do, my friends? Invest 20 hours of time (which I do not have) into increasing the size of all my prior images or just leave the size of the photos as they are? (Note there is no ‘middle ground’ option because, alas, I am not a ‘middle ground’ type of gal.)

Thanks to everyone for their lovely comments about Pete. He has fully recovered, and his skin now only bears some small scabs from the original mosquito bites which we suspect caused the allergic response. Poor little guy; at one stage, his left eye was so swollen that he couldn’t actually open it but he took it all in such good stride. He is seriously the most cheerful little boy. Nothing really seems to get him down except when daddy’s leaving for work or if he’s desperate for some milk, and I’m making him wait (gosh I sound cruel).

Last week was hot and humid, so we took the boys to our favourite beach at Balmoral. Pete loved the water. Angus was more hesitant. None of Pete’s clothes stayed dry. Angus didn’t want to get his pants wet. Pete struggled and screamed when Rick tried to extricate him from the water. Angus, having run back to shore, kept shouting out to Rick and Pete to “Come back! Come back!” Meanwhile, Jamie watched on and wished he was five months older so that he could hop out of his pram and walk around like his brothers.

It probably bodes well that the boys like the beach. Because that’s where we’re headed next year: the northern beaches. Yeeha!

Last year when Pete was still a baby, Angus would hurry to the door of the nursery whenever he could hear Pete crying. Not even a year later, I now watch Pete rush to the very same door whenever Jamie’s crying can be heard (which is often).

Is that deja vu or what? But deja vu of the sweetest kind, for sure.

I do apologise for the long breaks between updates recently. My (very legitimate) excuse is that I’m in the final throes of clearing my bigger-than-everest backlog of scrapbooking and photobooking and I’m determined to wrap it up this week. Just two days ago, I cut up a thousand little photos and have finger blisters to show for it. Please insert that into your dictionary as the new definition of determination (or insanity).

Anyway, today is the Chinese mid-autumn festival and as a result, I am craving moon cake in a very bad way (lest you forget I am actually Chinese deep down inside). Are semi-diabetic people allowed to eat moon cake? I say yes. My husband and endocrinologist say no.

Insert frustrated face here: >_<

Welcome to point form Fridays, my friends!

1) I got jabbed pretty badly today by a pathologist. Not once. Not twice. But three times. The third time hurt so much I think I almost said a bad word in my head.

2) Rick made me the most divine hot chocolate (with pink marshmallows) earlier in the week and since then I have been in love. (With both man and drink.)

3) Pete now says “stop” and “shop.” Future possible occupations: traffic controller, retailer or poet.

4) I found out about Pottermore this morning! Awesomeness.

5) This is not why I’m wearing the owl pendant above.

6) At dinner on Tuesday night, Angus said, “Mummy has big bum and baby penguin (his toy) has small bum.”

7) He also said, “Mummy has big tummy and baby penguin has small tummy.”

8) Clearly mummy wins since big is better than small, right?

9) I’ve started updating Cameron’s blog again.

10) It is 10.15pm and I still need to cook dinner.

Happy weekend everybody!

I ate sushi today. That was a definite highlight. I’d been craving salmon sushi since Wednesday last week, so today while I was child-free after my physio appointment, I snuck into Mitzu and helped myself to the most relaxing lunch I’d had in months (even if it was only for fifteen minutes). If you’re a specifics type of person, this is what I tasted, chewed, swallowed and hopefully digested:

1) Salmon sushi x 2
2) Unagi sushi x 2
3) Prawn parcel x 2
4) Deep-fried prawn sushi x 2
5) Salmon sushi x 2 (yes, that’s right, I went back for more…)

Last year, I used to take Pete along with me to Mitzu on Fridays when Angus was at ‘Play School’ (ie. daycare). He would sit in the high chair munching on his Kruskit (which makes up about 50% of his diet) while I would sip my green tea and savour the taste of salmon and soy sauce in my mouth. It definitely wasn’t as fun without him today but at least there was no floor mess for me to clean up afterwards. Always a plus.

The second highlight of the day occurred at the boys’ dinnertime. Pete had already finished up, so he was in the bath with Rick. Angus, however, was still working on his second course – a piece of crunchy apple. As I bustled around, slowly clearing up the pasta mess that Pete had systematically spread around him (if you escape floor mess at lunch, you’re bound to encounter it at dinner – it’s like some kind of physics law; or if you believe in karma, you might even call it ‘messy karma’), Angus got creative with the apple.

First he took a few bites off and turned it into a star (“Look mummy – star!”). He then decided he would make a moon, and sure enough, after some further bites, a shape that somewhat resembled a half moon emerged (“Mummy – moon!”). He chomped some more, and suddenly he had a “car!” This he drove around on his high chair tray for a bit (“Brrrrrooom, brrrrrooom…!”), before he decided he would turn it into “bottle.”

Such are the moments that make up for messy floors.

As for lowlights, there weren’t any.

But I did snap a few shots of some ‘low lights,’ namely: the red lantern lights while eating at Mitzu, the street traffic lights while waiting outside the local cafe in the evening, our bedroom lamp while stealing a nap before dinner and the pink sunset while driving home during dusk.

A final highlight? I came up with that double entendre all by myself.

So I’m kind of back to work again in that I’ve taken on a few design jobs for my various clients. I’ve had quite a long break actually: a whole two and a half months. I have to say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed freeing my mind from the mechanics of running a business and the urgency of meeting a deadline. Unfortunately the down side to taking a break when you’re a designer, is that it then takes quite a long time for the creative juices to kick in again.

This morning I sat at my desk for what seemed like a very long time (but in reality was only about half an hour) and just stared at the blank page in front of me. Normally I love a blank canvas but today it intimidated me. It stared defiantly back at me in fact. But I persevered (despite the stereo sound of two boys crying in turn in the background – so very conducive to creative output, I tell you). And with the help of two coffees, pinterest and awesome design blogs like designlovefest and AisleOne, I somehow, miraculously, managed to meet my deadlines today. Yeeha!

Oh and that’s Pete looking all grown up and at home on the couch. He’s finally worked out that it’s actually quite comfortable just sitting. And the remote – I can’t seem to keep him away from it. It attracts him like a magnet. And let me assure you he knows how to use it too: from pointing it at the television to turning the machine on to even changing channels.

(You might notice that his hair is looking a bit shorter here. I finally gave in yesterday and permitted Rick to ‘trim’ his hair. But now it looks all funny and I miss his curls terribly! But at least people might stop asking me if he’s a girl. Hopefully.)

I’m sitting here with Pete at a cafe – he’s eating a bread roll from Brumbys and I’m sipping frothy latte. He’s happily watching people come up and down the escalator while I’m typing away on my laptop. Occasionally, we sneak playful glances at each other. When we happen to catch the other’s eye, we have a bit of a giggle. We also lean into each other and swap kisses and hugs. During one of these exchanges, I realise that he’s discovered how to play with my hair. It is so precious I almost swoon. Yes, parenting can be a tough gig, but gosh moments like this make it all worthwhile.
