On the kiddo table, part 2

Preparation time:

30 minutes

Components:

Pan-fried basa fillet pieces (coated with corn flour), mashed potato, snow beans, peas and carrot pieces

Response from Angus (3 year old):

Happily ate the fish and rice all by himself! Named the fish pieces ‘Basser Biscuit Bites’ with the help of daddy. Declared loudly that, “I don’t like the green things.” But he ate them anyway.

Response from Pete (2 year old):

Happily ate the fish bites along with the mash and kept asking for “More!” Tried mixing diced snow peas in with the mash, but the cheeky monkey spat it all out as soon as he tasted it. Seriously need to consider pureeing Pete’s vegies.

Response from Jamie (1 year old):

Rejected fish bites. Chewed and swallowed a few of the snow peas.

Conclusion:

2 out of 3. Therefore, a winner!

Addendum:

This particular meal was actually done about one and a half month ago. Since then, we’ve given the boys these fish bites at least half a dozen times and they continue to love it. Even Jamie enjoys them now. Tonight, all three boys polished off their fish bites (save for one left over on Jamie’s plate), and both Angus and Pete even went for seconds. You can pair these fish bites with a whole multitude of sides. Tonight we had them with rice and bok choy. We are half-Asian after all.

p.s. I never thought the day would come, but Pete eats his vegies now! I guess he got sick of ‘the naughty corner’…

Gosh, I am totally struggling to come up with healthy toddler meals. Why is this so hard?

I think cause it can be so demotivating when they reject them! But we keep persisting anyway. Eventually they come around. (I think. I hope.)

This looks delicious, and something my 15 month old would love to eat.

It really is very yummy. Even if they don’t like it the first time, try it for a couple more times. Thanks for stopping by my blog too!

Haha I love that Pete wasn’t fooled by peas in his mash :-) It’s amazing how our eating habits are set so early in life. My mother rarely let us to eat artificially colored/ flavored foods, and now I’m still grossed out by multi-colored cereals!

That’s great, Gloria! Sadly, my kids don’t have that problem…

Hey, such a coincidence. We had snow peas last night. One good way to prepare them is by blanching. Boil for 2 minutes tops and have a big bowl of ice water ready to go. Keep in ice water for under 5 minutes, then drain and place on paper towel to dry. Then, add a good drizzling of sesame oil, a few tablespoons of white vinegar, sugar and salt to taste. I think kids will like the light taste, and the crunch of the fresh veggies!

Will keep that one in mind – thanks Alice.

I’m impressed, my 1 year old hardly touches protein unless it is in cheese or yoghurt form! p.s. I didn’t realise that your 3 youngest boys were 3,2&1, you must have your hands full, mine are 9 (well very nearly), 6 and 1, having 2 competent ones makes a big differenc … well most of the time …

What a great little dinner for young boys! I think your boys did really well!!! Very funny! Max would eat the fish, peas and carrots but not the mash! We are lucky he will eat most things but nothing too complicated, taste wise! I suppose it will take a while for their taste bud to develop so best to keep it simple hey! I think food and kids are going to be a ongoing challenge for quite a few years! :)

Yes, and they like to throw us off by sometimes liking something and sometimes not. Enough to age me three times over.

Yay, I’m so glad that all the boys are eating well. You’re such a good mom for preparing something that healthy and YUMMY! I love it – it makes me think of how much thought and love my mom puts into our meals at home

Actually, Rick prepares all our meals so kudos goes to their daddy!!! I simply chime in with ideas and suggestions, but he’s the one who executes them. :)

I chop up & hide mushrooms in my other half’s 13-yr old daughters food so that she eats them, ha ha!

PS. I’m now actually checking my clothes when I take them off to see whether I could get away with wearing them again… you’ve got me thinking :) And yes, being a restaurant manager is very tiring indeed, but there’s a change in the pipeline…

nice work! Do you and Rick cook separate meals for yourself and the kids, out of interest?

Reply

Pink Ronnie June 21, 2012 at 11:26 am

We used to do separate meals more often but now Rick (the cook in our family) will usually cook the same thing. We simply cut up meat into smaller pieces for the boys. Though sometimes we might still make porridge as a backup for little Jamie. Though maybe at least twice a week still, we might just give them boys Latina Fresh’s kids ravioli or porridge if we’re running out of time (or when parents are here babysitting).

We used to always eat after the kids, but now half the time we have meals with them and the other times we sit down to dinner after they’re in bed. There are pros and cons of both but it’s nice to have a mixture.

What about you guys?
