Wait before you wash

My mirror’s getting a bit tired of my so-called outfits, so we’re swapping views this Friday evening for my desktop instead.

I’m not sure why it took me so long to get onto Peppermint Magazine. Not only is it a beautiful publication, the stories are just lovely and so easy to read. I’m even loving the ads.

There’s one particular article called ‘Clean Up Your Closet’ which encourages us all to make small changes that can make a big difference. One suggestion is that we should wait longer before washing our clothes because as the writer points out, “For most of us, our days aren’t so perspiration prone that we need to wear once and automatically wash.” The point being that every wash we miss saves not only water but energy too.

Friends, I am totally doing my bit for the environment here. If nothing else, I happily allow my clothes to go unwashed for days. Sometimes weeks. That’s right: I said weeks. Plural.

Anyway, I’m sure most of you are out partying hard this Friday night, so I shall leave you with this cute little question from our Angus earlier this week:

“Daddy, are you still married to mummy when you’re grumpy?”

And with that – happy weekend, my friends!

Oh Angus . That’s a good point about washing clothes but I just love the smell of freshly done laundry. Maybe if I just wear a swimsuit every day instead of real clothes, I can conserve water and energy :)

Angus is just too cute!

I’m doing my bit for the enviroment too… some things just don’t need to get washed after one wear like skirts and jackets! My partner and I have an ongoing joke when I have bought something ie a jacket… a few months later I will say “this hasn’t been washed since I have bought it” He is always totally disgusted (laughing) as he has a tendancy to wash after every wear! One particular skirt didn’t get washed for a whole year, admittedly I had only worn it a few times but it was still funny seeing his reaction… priceless! btw – I am a very clean person :)

Lamina, I am totally the same with skirts and pants and jackets….
I now colour code my coat hangers so that I know which clothes are clean and which have been ‘pre-worn.’

Angus is gorgeous!! I love those questions! And peppermint mag has been coming at me from all directions – think it’s a sign I need to buy a copy! Happy weekend to you too xx

Richard Glover on the ABC Drive show once did a segment on how we bath too often, as in we’re actually not getting dirty enough in western society to need to bathe one (for some of us, twice) a day, we’ve just been sociologically conditioned to do it. So to do his bit for the environment, he vowed to bathe less often!! I’m with you on the clothes. It also reduces wear and tear on your items!

The magazine sounds lovely…is it a designer one or for all types of consumers?

Hey Soph,
It’s printed on recycled paper and it’s beautifully designed, so it feels kind of ‘designery’ (you know what I mean), but their audience is very broad. They tend to focus on sustainable and eco-friendly products/issues/brands. Really nice.

I’ve never heard of Peppermint, but I’m always on the hunt for good magazines. I have a Frankie from Australia on its way to me now and my other favorites are Lula, The Gentlewoman, and Kinfolk.

As for clothes, I know from experience that cashmere, wool, and jean can be worn many times before washing. :)

Just found your blog. It’s beautiful!
I love peppermint too. My mum got me a subscription last year. It’s such a shame there are only four issues a year.

I hear you on the laundry. My excuse is all this ran!

I have just learned how to wear clothes for a little longer instead of throwing them in the washing machine…how ? Our dryer broke down. Sad, but true.
Now I wear my pi’s for an extra night (so do the boys) and trackies that I bum around the house in ? 3 days…
It’s actually inspired me to write a post!

By the way, after looking at the Peppermint Magazine website, I wish I could find a copy! Looks like a great publication.

I like your thought on the washing topic. I guess the point is that we should all try to rethink our habits sometimes and we might come up with ideas we simply haven’t thought about before buut that are easily transfered into our lives. I need to wash all my tops after one day of wearing because I simple sweat A LOT. I don’t wash jeans very often though. And I usually only use the economy cycle for 45 min. I NEVER iron and we don’t have a dryer, that also safes a lot of energy although I never thought about the not ironing part like that before ;-)
Augus quote is brilliant. It might even have made you both be more aware of the way you deal with each other sometimes, right?

I don’t iron either. An extra bonus!

I sometimes leave my jeans weeks without washing them, but unfortunately I’m a restaurant manager which means a whole lotta sweating is going on… so yup, my washing machine is on quite a lot!

That is such a cute quote, how adorable! Also trying to be energy-efficient, washing only if dirty, turning off all electronics on stand-by, turn off lights when I leave a room. Small steps, but at least steps in the right direction :)

So true…I have a basket designated for “re-wearables” in my closet. My excuse was that it lengthens the life of the clothes by not overwashing. Now I will add environmentally friendly to the list too ;)

Pink Ronnie June 26, 2012 at 10:46 pm

Absolutely! I just put my ‘re-wearables’ on a different coloured coathanger!

Thanks so much for the lovely mention of my piece in Peppermint :)

I thought I’d point out that I often use linen spray between washes of garments if I think they need a freshening up. I also use it on my puppy’s bedding so she smells like fresh laundry!

My current linen spray of choice is from The Laundress in New York – (http://www.donnahay.com.au/shop-online/living/the-laundress-fabric-fresh-1)

Hope that helps!
